SAWA Theatre presents: JUNUN
What is Sawa?
Sawa Theatre, in partnership with the Gas Station Arts Centre (GSAC) and the Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP), is a theatre program for Syrian youth that aims to foster creativity, promote personal growth and encourage solidarity. This program is a collaborative project, established by a group of dedicated university students and young artists who share a similar vision and passion for theatre; both as a platform for challenging harmful misconceptions as well as providing an outlet for personal growth.
We started off with workshops composed of movement classes, team building exercises and theatre games. During this time, our playwrights attended several workshops and content creation sessions to work with our cast on a script based on their ideas, input and experience. Sawa Theatre is currently running rehearsals and our director is doing incredible work as he prepares the cast for 'show time!'.
Sawa Theatre is thrilled to unveil our original creation, JUNUN. JUNUN, a bilingual piece — performed in English and Arabic — follows a series of interwoven stories that tell of trauma, loss and betrayal and it is a beautiful reminder that, although it may seem impossible, one can heal, hope, love and trust again. Sawa’s cast and crew want the final performance to be a reflection of the cast’s identity, not as newcomers or ‘refugees’ per say, but a reflection of intricate and complex individualities.
We hope you’ll join us for this night of celebration and entertainment!
